Dr. Behnke to present at RMNP this Saturday. Dr. Robert J. Behnke, professor emeritus of Fisheries And Conservation at Colorado State University will present on “Native Trout of Rocky Mountain National Park—Past, Present an Future” on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 7:00 P.M. at the Rocky Mountain National Park Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. Dr. Behnke is widely recognized as one of the foremost authorities in the world on trout and salmon, and he has played a pivotal role in the recovery of greenback cutthroat trout. His new book, About Trout, is drawn from his “About Trout” columns that have appeared in Trout magazine for 25 years. This program is co-sponsored by Alpine Anglers and RMNP and is a great opportunity to hear Dr. Behnke talk about the history of greenback cutthroat trout. Special thanks to Bob Trout and Dallas Maurer for setting up this special program! |

Alpine Anglers 2008 Calendar This summer will be one of our busiest ever. Chris Kennedy to announce 2008 fieldwork schedule. Chris will discuss the U.S. Fish and Wildlife 2008 fieldwork at the Alpine Anglers June meeting (details at right). As always, Chris needs our help with electro-fishing surveys and “hook and line” sampling. There is no better way to see and fish some of the best waters of RMNP than with Chris. |

Pack horses haul volunteers’ gear to Lawn Lake in 2007 project. |
|
Pack horse program continues in 2008. Thanks to special funding from Colorado Trout Unlimited, Alpine Anglers will continue providing pack horses to transport the personal gear of volunteers to remote work locations of the Greenback Trout Recovery Program. Starting last year, this program has taken much of the pain out of greenback volunteer efforts. This year Alpine Anglers program managers Dallas Maurer and Les Beery plan to expand the scope of the program and offer pack horse support for most back country projects. Alpine Anglers also provides camping equipment to be used by volunteers who do not have their own. Watch the volunteer program announcements from Austin Condon for information about pack horse support. |

Successful River Cleanup completed. How many bags of trash accumulate along the Big Thompson River from one year to the next? We don’t know, but there are at least two dozen fewer after the efforts of Alpine Anglers members and friends on National River Cleanup Day, Saturday May 17. Participants spent approximately two hours scouring the river along Highway 34 (no transmissions were found this year) and then met at the Lake Estes Marina for a lunch of grilled burgers and hot dogs. Thanks to Les and Kimball Berry for coordinating this event. |
