Picnic Saturday, August 23rd!

The annual Alpine Anglers picnic is Saturday, August 23d from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Lily Lake picnic area. You’re invited!

Bring your spouse or your fishing buddy. There will be food. There will be drink.  There will be a casting contest with prizes. Most of all, there will be a chance to ease out and chat with fellow anglers. If you have a great dish you’d like to share, bring it.  If it’s all you can do to get there, just come. There will be plenty.

Alpine Anglers wins U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Regional Director’s award

Alpine Anglers has been awarded the Regional Director’s award for conservation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Chapter president Trigg White accepted the award at a USFWS banquet in Denver on July 28th from USFWS Director Dale Hall and Director of USFWS Region 6 Steve Guertin. The award honors the chapter’s contributions to the Greenback Cutthroat Recovery Program.

According to the citation read at the presentation, “Chapter members constitute the vast majority of the field crew who monitor greenback cutthroat trout populations within Rocky Mountain National Park. This may entail hiking up to 12 miles a day into some the most remote locations within the Park, carrying heavy packs and camping out for up to ten days at a time, many times in inclement weather. The Fish and Wildlife Service and National Park Service rely very heavily on these volunteers to conduct field surveys.”

Alpine Anglers wishes to thank the whole cadre of volunteers whose efforts are making the greenback recovery program a success. To learn more about volunteer opportunities in the greenback program (not all of them “entail hiking up to 12 miles a day”) contact Alpine Anglers volunteer coordinator Austin Condon at AWCFlash@aol.com.

Local guides spill the beans at Alpine Anglers meeting

The promise of local guides telling how to catch the local fish brought a good turnout to the July chapter meeting. Estes Angler guides Mike Oatley and Scott Davidson described where to find them and how to catch them in Rocky Mountain National Park. Mike even shared his secret RMNP fly selection (Royal Wulffs in sizes 12-18). Scott demonstrated how to tie several productive flies.

Thanks to Dallas Maurer for setting up this program and the Mike, Scott and Grant Rollo of Estes Angler for supporting our chapter.

Greenback cutthroat stickers still available

Do you have one of these on your bumper? A $5 contribution puts one on your truck. Pick one up in Estes Park at Scott’s Sporting Goods, Estes Angler or Kirk’s Mountain Adventures. Or send a check for $5 to Alpine Anglers, P.O. Box 4021, Estes Park, CO 80517. It’s a good cause and a great looking sticker!
