Alpine Anglers is sponsoring a youth learn-to-fly-fish day for boys and girls ages 11 to 15. Our objective is to help young people get started in what we hope will become a life-long activity.

Thanks to a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, we will provide each participant a free Cortland Fly Rod and Reel set and a selection of flies to take home with them.

The event will accommodate up to 15 participants who will be organized in groups of 4 to 5 to assure personalized instruction. Instruction will be lead by professional fly-fishing guides.

What participants will learn:

  • Equipment--How to set up their fly rod and reel

  • Knots--The basic knots to connect leaders and flies

  • Casting--The four basic casts needed to catch trout in RMNP

  • Flies--What trout eat and what flies imitate which insects

  • Fishing--How to hook and land trout

  • Trout--How to identify the different species of trout found in RMNP

  • Conservation--How TU is helping protect and restore native trout in RMNP

A cook-out lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided. (There's a $10 contribution for each participant that covers the cost.) We encourage at least one parent to attend and observe. (But it's not required.)

Application Deadline: May 28, 2011

How to apply:

Sorry--The 2011 event is full and registration is closed. We plan to host another in 2012, but don't wait that long to go fishing!
